Sick Hamster!

My hamster, Sunny (a Roborovski hamster), is acting sick. She isn't very old... less than a year! She has a wet bottom, which led me to believe that it may be wet tail, but there is no diarrhea (and my water bottle is leaky, or it could be that she isn't using her dust bath, making it look like she is wet, as she doesn't feel wet)!
She has been sitting still a lot but her sister, Skittles, will still sit with her and snuggle her. She is very slow and doesn't move shut. She also keeps her eyes shut! She still cleans her self, however. I had let the cage go a little longer than usual last week (I try to clean it once a week), and she has been played with a lot more lately. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with her? Can someone help me?
Sunny and Skittles, my girls!

Maybe it's diabetes? Her bottom could be wet from sitting in pee and
that would explain the slower movement...I would check out the link in "Hamterific U" that talks about dwarf hamster diabetes and see if her symptoms match up...I hope your little one feels better soon! |

try to give sunny a rest for a while, maybe playing with her this often is not helping. i agree with henryham, it sounds like could be diabetes, had you given her a lot of fresh fruits / veggies, or store bought hammy treats, that would be most likely the case. they all have a lot of sugars, especially fruits and treats.
otherwise, could be maybe some sort of infection, have you or anybody else contacting with sunny been sick, as hams can catch human viruses. or has her food and water intake decreased lately, if so , might be bacterial, again diabetes, or aspergillis ( check out article hamsterific u ). might want to go to vet, get the baby checked out from professional. you might wanna separate skittles n sunny, as sunny might have something contagious, and keep them separate till you go to vet and get results. best of wishes for both of your hams!
With love,
The hamster bookworm, her sweet syrian hammie Nibblett, and her precious pup Lucy Louisa |
